A torch-wielding white supremacist caught on camera marching in the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville claims he is not “an angry racist” and just wants to preserve European culture.
History and politics student Peter Cvjetanovic, 20, saw a photograph of himself from Saturday’s rally holding a torch and apparently shouting shared online, one by a Twitter account called ‘Yes, You’re Racist.’
“I did not expect the photo to be shared as much as it was. I understand the photo has a very negative connotation,” Cvjetanovic said in an interview with Channel 2 News, “But I hope that the people sharing the photo are willing to listen that I’m not the angry racist they see in that photo.”

I don’t like extreme nationalism in any form. It creates conflicts. At the same time, I think that borders and nations needs to be respected. The Crimea and Ukraine situation is not good – regardless of who is in power in Ukraine.

I keep imagining a different kind of protest. Like white blood cells surrounding an infection and neutralizing it. What if all hate displays were met with tremendous presence but all of it stony silent? 50 people in defense of rationality present for every loud, aggressive hater trying to be intimidating, and their response was simply to silently surround them and demonstrate that aggressive hatred impacts nothing, provokes nothing. Their most profound fear is that they are meaningless and weak. Clarify to them that so long as they choose violence to express their fear they can never be anything but meaningless and weak.

The ability to restrain ourselves from our worst impulses, to protect others from what is not good in ourselves, is what creates peaceful co-existence.
A leader who is not civilized deserves no respect. A nation that is not civilized is simply band of brutes. We are not naturally civil. It is not easy to regulate our impulses and instincts so that our company is pleasant.
How we feel, think, or believe is internal and reflexive. We only enjoy these freely when we can refrain from using our actions or words to force those thoughts, feelings, or beliefs on others. Civility is worth much more than any single culture or nation.
Devary Shmaya-Smart – Indeed. The challenge is that civility is often mistaken for weakness, by those that rule by (apparent) strength. Civility is not weakness, but true strength. The strength to remain calm when it storms, the strength to remain fair under pressure, and the strength to be kind where others are indifferent, or even cruel.
