The best car for the environment is no car at all, the second best is an old car with good maintenance.

Lars Fosdal a bicycle qualifies as “no car at all”. A new car can never be as environmentally friendly as an old car (if the latter is reasonable clean), because its production will need energy and resources and generate lots of pollution. The old one has already been produced. So driving an old car until it falls apart is better for the environment than buying a new one, regardless how “clean” the new one might be.
Thomas Mueller – IMO, the math about old car / new car viability needs to be proven. After all, recycling metals requires less energy than the production of new metals.
