Five hours of dugnad with bush and shrubbery removal with the local youth gymnasts today, providing grazing grounds for cattle on Langøya (Long Island) outside Langesund. A hundred years ago, there were farms out here, but as people moved away, nature took over. We were 70+ people, and cleared 9000 square meters. The youngsters were happy, playful and energetic – and with a brief BBQ break halfway through, time really flew by. The motivation was that each head earned NOK 100.- per hour to help finance the youth gymnast trip to Belgium this summer, so it was for a good cause.

Lars Fosdal … ecch, here’s how my mind works. I see dugnad , hop on the etymology, community labour, but from that to Old Norse, dugnaðr , from thence to duga -> duge , here’s where it gets interesting. Dette duger , that will do, that will work, that’s sufficient. Dette duger ikke , that won’t do at all. Yet, heh heh… duger til jobben, qualified to do the job.
