Bye bye, MeWe.

I deleted my MeWe account today. MeWe remained a walled in garden and failed to let me be in control of my content. It uses the wrongdoings of Zuckerberg as an argument for locking you inside MeWe, and it touts Tim Berners-Lee as a patron and claims to strive for the same goals. TBL’s “Solid” pods are the complete opposite of MeWe. Where MeWe locks you in, Solid gives you the ownership and control, and you can chose to open the door for services like MeWe.

I still miss Google+ which was truly unique as a platform. I owned my content, I controlled the access, and it was ad-free, and while Google cared – mostly spam free. I was blessed with a circle of interesting people who were compassionate, knowledgeable, skilled, artistic and had a great sense of humor.

Although Google had some incidents with regards to unauthorised access to the “About me” pages, that was peanuts compared to the systemic exposure that Facebook has repeatedly been caught doing.

Google created something awesome, but somehow started to mismanage it. To the very last day I had interesting posts to read, and I miss it so much. You had gold, Google, and you flushed it down the drain.

So – what’s next? I don’t know. I use Twitter now and then, and I have a few other SoMe accounts, but none that feel like home. Still waiting for OpenBook Okuna.io to open up, and for Solid to mature. So, for now I write WordPress blog posts 🙂

  1. I feel Google+ started to decline after Vic Gundottra left his post! But, I miss G+! Been an Alpha-tester at Openbook for a few weeks and really feel this could be a nice place to be and again create content that matters!
We got public feed, circles (called list) and communities. Much the same as G+. But, being an Alpha-test many basic features do t work yet, like video/gif upload, etch.. But, I’ve read Beta will open soon. Hope to see you on Openbook soon!
    MeWe was garbage!
