Lars Fosdal In my deeper epistemological explorations: the distinction between the-thing-itself and signatures-of-the-thing.
This has certain relevancies in, say, the matter of identity vs. identifiers. DNA and fingerprints aren’t identities but signatures, which happen to be distributed fairly generously.
As are beaver-chewed tree stumps, though with a certain workfactor component.
