Interesting.

Interesting. RemObjects Software is adding Swift (as in Apple’s new language) support to their toolset, allowing mixing it with Oxygen/RemObjects C# on Android/Java and .NET.

They’ve also added a new IDE named Fire on OSX.

  1. I’ve been keeping an eye on Fire as much as one can without being a RemObjects customer, ie via twitter etc.  Looks great.  3 languages at least – Oxygene (Pascal), Hydrogene (C#) and Swift?

I don’t know if it includes a UI editor of any sort.  marc hoffman may be able to chime in and answer all our questions 🙂

If you do see this, marc, what can we expect of Fire? You hint at having a few interesting takes on how an IDE is constructed.  (Also, what’s your opinion of Swift?  I’m conflicted – there seem to be some odd choices or unexpected behaviours, to me.  The language also is not “readable” – I wish they’d use clearer keywords and in one or two cases less concise symbols.  You must like it to make it a primary RemObjects language, though.)

  2. Hi. Fire will follow our philosophy of using the platform native UI widgets and designers. It integrates with Xcode to edit Mac and IOS UI (it’s a single click/key sync process), and we’ll do similar for Android.

I hear you re being torn on Swift. there’s a lot to love about it, but there’s also quite a few WTF moments. Some of which have been alleviated in recent betas of Apple’s implementation. All in all its an interesting language with some nice concepts — and  i cant wait to find a reason to use it for some real live coding…

  3. marc hoffman – Do you know if Swift is an open language? I.e. will Apple allow others to implement non-OSX/iOS versions of Swift?

I like the way it looks, even with the wtf’s.
