It appears that the cat registered the quake before the big shakes set in. I wonder what it sensed? Micro movement? Low-frequency noise? Electrical or chemical signals? All we know for sure, is that claws doesn’t necessarily ensure traction in case of sudden mobility needs.

Judging from the shakes I’ve felt in new Zealand it’s often a small little “rustle” then silence and then the bigger jolt. Maybe they just cut it out of the clip?
Our cats notice a rain squall before it actually hits. My guess is more acute hearing and in a higher or lower frequency than we can register.
