The pressure difference within a vacuum is never more than 1 bar (about the same as diving 10m deep), but it’s the massive surface area that results in such tremendous force. And yes, I have heard first hand stories of similar damage because some small vac valve got stuck closed.

Patrick Hughes , I’ve seen it before. Never tire of seeing it though. Vacuum implosions are fun to watch. The rapidity of it is incredible though.
