I actually use Office quite seldom, but I am totally dependent on Windows for all my development tools, and since the main target platform for my UI related development is Windows – I can’t do without it. I can make use of the additional *nix platform, though – to do server side stuff like https REST servers and PostgreSQL databases, etc.
Bummer? Not really. It has the best and widest collection of apps and tools available. And I like it. I’ve used it since version 3.x for Workgroups.
George Nasr Lack of backwards compatibility? How old is the Win32 API now?
.NET is backwards compatible. A .NET 1 app still runs fine, as long as you have the support installed. Direct3D is only a miniscule part of Windows, and most of it’s woes were in the third party drivers, AFAIK?
